You’ve found the perfect stylist who has given you a fantastic cut and an amazing color, and has gotten your hair happy and healthy again. And for a few days after your appointment, you look fantastic. Slowly but surely, as the days wear on, you notice those subtle hints that the shine is coming off the apple…you. What can you do from home to keep your hair in great shape between appointments?
First of all, don’t be worried by the things that happen naturally. For example, it’s really ok to lose between 100 and 150 strands of hair per day. But if your hair is prone to breakage, use a broad-toothed comb to gently remove tangles from wet hair. Schedule a trim every six to eight weeks to take off about a quarter inch of dry, rough and most likely split ends.
You will also want to skip shampooing every day, especially if you spend the day in a dry, centrally heated environment. On the days that you do shampoo, be sure to use some conditioner on your ends, and rinse it off with cool water to add both strength and shine. Also, take a look at your hair product ingredients. Opt for a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner pair to avoid stripping too many of your hair and scalp’s essential oils.
Give you hair a break from heat styling techniques whenever possible. If you must use them, consider using a good serum, or make your own with this recipe. In a clean spray bottle, combine 200 ml of water with two or three drops of coconut oil, four or five drops of almond oil, and two teeny tiny drops of conditioner. Add another 50 ml of water and shake it all up. Once the foam settles, it’s ready to use.
