Keratin Treatments 101

The key to smooth and shiny hair is keratin treatments. A frizz-free, glossy look is just a process away. However, you should know what you are going to get. A good stylist should walk you through the process before it begins. After all, this is about your hair! No one should be confused while sitting before a hairstylist. So, we created a guide on everything you need to know about keratin treatments.

What is a Keratin Treatment?

Famous for its long-lasting results of up to six months, a keratin treatment is a process that shines and smooths frizzy hair. Keratin treatments have many variations, both in their name and process cycle. However, some hairstylists offer a customized version of a keratin treatment by blending more than one process to enhance the results. Some hairstylists offer a formaldehyde-free keratin treatment. Formaldehyde or no formaldehyde, a keratin treatment, even at a basic level, is healthy for your hair because it injects essential protein into the porous areas of your head.

What do Keratin Treatments do?

All hair is composed of Keratin. This process adds the protein you have lost due to age or chemical services. With the right amount of heat, protein is sealed back into the hair, leaving hair glossy and shiny post-treatment.

The Process

The process length is dependent on the formula used by your hairstylist. It also depends on the condition and volume of your hair. However, the process can last up to 4 hours (we recommend bringing a snack). The process starts by washing the hair with a keratin-safe shampoo. Depending on the formula your hairstylist is using, keratin treatments can be done on wet or dry hair. Then, using a flat iron on low or medium heat, your hairstylist seals the required regions, and you are good to go!

What to Expect

When keratin treatments first became available, hairstylists used formaldehyde to remove the frizz, slightly disturbing the natural texture. The keratin treatments of today are carried out without formaldehyde, using alternative ingredients to remove the frizz, which aids in maintaining your natural hair's texture. During this process, hair is also able to be straightened.

Post-Treatment Care

Post-product usage depends on the type of process performed. Some restrict washing or tying up hair for at least 48 hours. After that critical time has passed, the shampoo you use is paramount. You have to give a closer look at the ingredients of your shampoo. Sulfate-free formula shampoo is the key to healthier results.

Some processes have no downtime, meaning you can blow dry your hair immediately. Ensure to follow the exact instructions from the salon you have received your treatment.
